September 19, 2005 Source: University of Calgary: http://www.ucalgary.ca/news/sept05/bone-joint-health.html Undergraduate Student Research in Bone and Joint Health U of C undergraduate students working on a wide range of bone and joint related research projects will be showcasing their investigations on Tuesday, September 20 in the Rozsa Centre from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public. The 4th Annual Markin-Flanagan Student Symposium marks the end of a summer term for the Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP) in Bone and Joint Health. In this program, students work on a wide range of bone and joint projects including sport injuries, aging, osteoarthritis, infectious diseases, biomechanics, health economics, genetics and more. Four undergraduate students will give 15-minute oral presentations on their research projects, while 14 others will showcase their projects on posters. Symposium topics will address research questions such as: Can infection following a knee or hip replacement be eliminated? How does calcium affect muscle fatigue? Do you have a higher risk of osteoarthritis following an ACL injury? Why are women winning the aging war? USRP is open to students in Engineering, Kinesiology, Medicine, Nursing and Science. The students get money or course credit and the opportunity to work shoulder-to-shoulder with a top U of C researcher.
