All across the country, people are demanding governments at all levels make known their position on the issue. On September 24, the Institute of the Environment at the University of Ottawa in collaboration with the City of Ottawa, the City of Gatineau and Municipality of Chelsea, will hold a conference that will explore what concerns Canadians and its leaders when it comes to cosmetic pesticide use. “The conference will provide attendees with current information on the risks and benefits of pesticide use, distinguishing what we know from what we suspect, and what we simply don't know”, said Scott Findlay, director of uOttawa’s Institute of the Environment. “Our intent is to provide people with the information required to make sound decisions - at both personal and institutional levels - on pesticide use.” Conference speakers will address four major issues. What we know and don’t know about the effects of pesticides on human health and environment, The legal and constitutional context for pesticide regulation in Canada The role of local government in achieving desirable pesticide use goals The economics of environmental sustainabilitySpeakers will include experts on the environmental and human health risks of pesticides, the current state of pesticide regulation in Canada, municipal leaders who have struggled with the pesticide issue and business leaders who will speak to the economic implications of pesticide use.
