September 19, 2005 Source: Mount Allison University: http://www.mta.ca/news/index.cgi?id=807 Curator of Education and Community Outreach joins the Owens SACKVILLE, NB — The Owens Art Gallery is very pleased to announce the addition of a Curator of Education and Community Outreach to its staff. This two-year position is made possible by a generous donation from longstanding friend and alumnus of Mount Allison University, The Honourable Robert V. Barritt. It will enable the Gallery to build on its ongoing commitment to educational programming with the development of new initiatives aimed at engaging a variety of audiences. Lucy MacDonald, a graduate of the fine arts department and past intern at the Owens Art Gallery will be taking up this exciting new post and is very happy to be returning to the Mount Allison community. Since finishing her internship at the Owens, Lucy has worked at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and completed a Master’s in Museum Education at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She also holds a Master of Design in Visual Communication, Illustration from the Edinburgh College of Art. With the addition of the Curator of Education position, the Owens will continue to develop innovative programming such as its successful “Education to Schools” Program that has brought artists and young audiences together to explore the art-making process. The Owens will also be exploring new collaborations and special projects as well as establishing a greater online presence as it works towards launching the Digital Owens on its web site. The Digital Owens will allow visitors to search through the permanent collection online as well as present interactive elements for young audiences, resources for teachers, and a virtual gallery space for artists investigating the possibilities of creating art for the web. With its expanded education and outreach programs, the Owens will connect with immediate and wider communities, extending access to its collection, active exhibition program of contemporary and historical art and numerous visiting artists. —30—
