On Thursday, September 15, Advanced Education Minister Dave Hancock announced that the University of Lethbridge will be receiving $12 million in capital funding to help expand its Water and Environmental Science Building. “This project at the University of Lethbridge is a significant expansion of first-class research in an area that is of importance to the health of the province’s environment and economy,” said Hancock. “The university has already made significant investments in water research and combined with this expansion, they will be able to attract even more researchers, professors and students to the province’s advanced learning system.” With construction planned to be completed in mid-2007, the building’s facilities will provide both laboratory and office space for investigators and their research teams to carry out research and education programs. It will also allow the university to increase access to graduate and undergraduate students. The province is also providing $5 million to the University of Lethbridge towards upgrading University Hall. This two-phase project will upgrade the air quality and ventilation systems to improve learning environment and energy efficiency. The funding for this project and others at post-secondary institutions around the province comes as a result of the First-Quarter Fiscal Update on August 29. "The U of L has made significant commitments to water and environmental science research,” U of L President Bill Cade said. “This funding from Advanced Education will allow us to create a research and training environment which will allow us to increase the impact of our research and provide many unique opportunities for students, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The facility will provide state of the art infrastructure for our world class research team in the highest research priority area for Albertans” A total of $614 million has been allocated for Alberta’s post-secondary institutions under the Government of Alberta’s 2005-08 Capital Plan, an increase of $145 million since Budget 2005 was announced in April. - 30 - Advanced Education Communications Contact: Cameron Traynor (780) 422-5400 -- U of L Communications and Public Relations Contact: Bob Cooney, Communications and PR Officer (403) 382-7173
