Allisonians Wallace and Margaret McCain of Toronto made the donation in support of the University’s upcoming Student Centre project, a project of great magnitude and importance for present and future students at Mount Allison. Mount Allison University President Dr. Kenneth Ozmon acknowledged this gift saying, "The new Student Centre will offer all student services, outside the academic realm, in a state-of-the-art, yet historic Mount A setting. It enables us to continue to work towards our goal of educating the whole person. The Mount Allison Experience will be significantly enhanced because of Wallace and Margaret’s generosity. We extend our sincerest thanks to them." Margaret McCain, graduate, honorary degree holder, Officer of the Order of Canada, and Chancellor Emeritus of Mount Allison said, "Mount Allison plays an important role in our family history. We are so very happy to support a project that will enrich the student experience at Mount A, and build on a tradition of excellence for our alma mater." The new Student Centre, to be located in the renovated Trueman Hall complex, will encompass all student activities outside the classroom. Although no significant changes will be made to the building’s historic sandstone exterior, the renovated facility will house both the Student Services and Student Life departments, as well as the Student Health Centre, an International Student Centre, the Students’ Administrative Council offices, the Argosy and CHMA newsrooms, the Allisonian yearbook office, the bookstore, the campus pub, a café, as well as space for Mount Allison’s many clubs and activities and the newly-established fitness centre. The Facilities Master Plan is a multi-year strategy to improve the quality of life on campus. As one of the oldest educational institutions in Canada, Mount Allison is faced with the challenge of maintaining and replacing many buildings on campus, the majority being over 40 years old. The framework of the campus plan is to have three distinct areas: a residential area, located within close proximity to the newly renovated Jennings Dining Hall; a consolidated academic area in the centre block; and a centralized student life area, housing the renovated student centre, that this generous gift will make possible, adjacent to athletics facilities.
