Provost and Vice-President (Academic) of Carleton University, Alan Harrison, is delighted to announce that Carleton alumna Margaret Haines (BA/70) will be returning as its new University Librarian. As a key member of Carleton’s senior management team, Haines will have overall responsibility for strategic leadership including staffing, programs, and services in MacOdrum Library. "Margaret already has an outstanding track record in library sciences," says Harrison. "She’s the perfect person to strengthen the library’s position at the heart of teaching, learning, and research on campus." Haines will be coming home to Canada from England where she is currently the Director of Information Services and Systems at King’s College London. She also holds Visiting Professor positions with the University of Sheffield and the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. She has held several other prestigious positions in England including Regional Director of Research/Knowledge Management for the National Health Service and Chief Executive of the Library and Information Commission. Prior to moving to England, she held similarly prominent positions in Canada, including Director of Library Services for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. She has a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Toronto and is a Fellow (2004) of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) in the UK. She was recently President of CILIP. She is the author of over 50 publications and has been invited to speak at over 200 events in several countries. In 1996, she won the Barnard Prize from the LA Health Libraries Group. "I am excited about returning to my alma mater and to my hometown where I have many friends and family," notes Haines. "I believe that the library is one of the main contributors to an enriched student experience. Carleton's Learning Commons brings together the best of IT, library and pedagogical services for the benefit of students and staff and I am eager to play a leading role in its further development. I also want to show how the library and its staff can contribute to all aspects of university life through supporting evidence-based practice and knowledge management in pedagogy, administration and research." Future plans for the Library include an on-campus Library Annex for the storage of library materials which is under construction, and the development of a Library Space Master Plan. The MacOdrum Library, named in honour of Carleton’s second President, Murdoch Maxwell MacOdrum has a collection of more than three million books, journals, government documents, maps, newspapers, music scores, microfilms, tapes, CDs, and archival and rare materials. In its continuing efforts to enhance the student experience at Carleton, the entire Library is now wireless and the Learning Commons was launched in the Library to provide one-stop-learning, IT, and research assistance to students. The Library’s 131 full-time equivalent staff members, including 27 professional librarians, represent a wide and impressive range of expertise. -30- For more information: Lin Moody Media Relations Officer Carleton University 613-520-2600 ext. 8705
