The world comes to Brock University

Brock University student Rachelle Demetriades knew her life had changed forever when she observed children picking through the garbage in a Peruvian slum.

The third-year Health Sciences student was on her first trip to the South American country in 2004, a participant in a unique international program called Solidarity Experiences Abroad. Developed by Brock's Campus Ministries and now national and international in scope, the program allows students to work closely with the people of the country they are visiting, and in some cases, earn credits towards their degree.

Demetriades, who has returned to Peru one other time and has plans to visit Peru, Ecuador and Brazil this year, will speak about her experiences in a session called My Visit to the Global Village on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2-3 p.m., in Decew R208. The presentation is part of Brock's International Education Week, to be held from Monday, Nov. 14 to Friday, Nov. 18.

Other events include:

  • This Is My Home photo exhibit: International students, including Clemens Kienzle, a first- year student in Applied Languages Studies from Germany and Albania, share photos of their homelands. The exhibit can be seen at four locations on campus from Nov. 14 to 18.

  • Home Away From Home photo exhibit: Brock students share photos of the countries they visited on exchange or Solidarity In Action programs. The photos will be displayed in the Library Instruction Room 211 on the main floor of the library - to your right when you enter the main library doors - from Nov. 14 to 18.

  • Portuguese Day: Consul General Maria Amelia Paiva of the Portuguese Republic will visit Brock to hear presentations by faculty, students and Portuguese poet Eduino de Jesus. The presentations take place 4 to 5:30 p.m., 13th floor, Schmon Tower, on Nov. 14.

  • Sharing Our World Brown Bag Lunch Series: Two visiting scholars will lead cultural presentations from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in Decew R208, on Nov. 17. International snacks will be provided.

Brock joins educational institutions across Canada and in more than 85 countries to celebrate International Education Week. The week highlights the importance and significant contribution of international education initiatives that prepare Canadians to effectively participate in an increasingly global network. The University has a growing international program: more than 1,000 international graduate and undergraduate students from about 80 countries are attending Brock in 2005-06.
