CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY AWARDED 3 CANADA RESEARCH CHAIRS

MONTREAL/November 10, 2005 —

Concordia University has been awarded 3 new Canada Research Chairs (CRC) - one Tier-1 level chair and two Tier-2 level chairs. Tier-1 chairs are awarded to well-established researchers and provide them with $200,000 per year over a 7-year period. Tier-2 Chairs are awarded to emerging researchers, and provide $100,000 per year over a 5-year period.

Jean C. Lapierre, the Minister of Transport, made the announcement this morning on behalf of Minister of Industry David L. Emerson, who is also the minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs Program.

Concordia’s President and Vice-Chancellor Claude Lajeunesse welcomed the announcement saying, "Concordia continues to reinforce its research profile and these most recent Chairs reflect both the scope and relevance of the research conducted here."

Tier 1:

Robin Michel, CRC in Cellular and Molecular Neuromuscular Physiology, comes to Concordia from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. Dr. Michel was the first to demonstrate novel features of an exciting molecule, calcineurin, and its key role at the nexus of signalling pathways leading to skeletal muscle growth. His research into nerve and muscle signalling may lead to new therapeutic strategies to counter neuromuscular disease and may change our outlook on preventative and remedial exercise.

Tier-2:
Szilvia Papai, CRC in Economic Theory, comes to Concordia from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. She studies how and why certain coalitions are created, and how and why they break up. One method she uses to tackle these questions makes use of game theory. Dr. Papai aims to identify conditions under which a stable coalition structure is guaranteed to exist, both in terms of the coalitions that may form and the underlying preferences, and to analyze the evolution of coalitional structures.

Steven High, CRC in Public History, is presently an associate professor of history at Concordia. His research program is based on the premise that the stories people tell matter. He uses oral history to examine how people remember the past and use historical memory to make sense of their individual and collective realities when confronted by transformative change. Instead of working up transcripts of oral interviews, an outdated and time consuming process, he will develop new digital approaches to oral history in the state-of-the art oral history research laboratory he is building – the first of its kind in Canada.

The Canada Research Chairs program was launched in 2000 and helps universities attract and retain the best researchers and achieve research excellence in the natural sciences and engineering, health services, social sciences and the humanities.
