Associate of Arts Degree - Criminology specialization - Northwest Community College

Northwest Community College's Associate of Arts Degree in Criminology offers students 'the opportunity to delve into the various aspects of crime and understand it from the point of view of each discipline' that constitutes Criminology. Moreover, students will 'study the characteristics of criminals and deviant behaviour and how the law and the courts attempt to prevent and control crime.' Course for the Program can be taken at the Prince Rupert, Smithers, and Terrace campuses. To be eligible for admission, applicants will usually need either a high school diploma or equivalent Career and College Preparation course credit. Most individual courses in the Criminology program have their own ' specific prerequisites which must be met by prospective students' although 'in some cases, instructors will conditionally admit students lacking formal prerequisites.'

The Program is designed for individuals aspiring to further their education and/or career opportunities in the Criminology field or related areas. Graduates of the Program will be prepared to pursue employment, career advancements, and/or further studies in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related areas. Career-wise, graduates may apply for positions in the criminal justice system across Canada. For example, graduates may pursue positions in such areas as border or community services, corrections, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, insurance, investigations, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, Provincial and Federal Departments of Justice and Solicitor General, public administration, Revenue Canada, social work, the courts, and victim services, to name but a few. Students should be aware that the Program will provide them with the requirements to pursue employment in the criminal justice system. However, some employers and/or careers may require employees to have credentials beyond those supplied by the Program. Furthermore, having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the security and other areas of the Criminal Justice field as many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history.

Furthermore, graduates will be able to transfer to various universities to further their studies in Criminology at the BachelorĘs level. Students can also apply credits in Criminology towards degrees in other programs like Associate of Arts Degree - general, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN), or Social Work. Graduates who decide to further their education at the university level may be able to take select courses online by teleconference, and/or at the College's campuses provided an agreement exists to this effect between the College and the university to which the graduate transfers.
