What is criminology?Criminology is an interdisciplinary, scientific approach to the study, analysis, and understanding of crime, including its causes, consequences, and prevention, drawing from such academic fields as behavioural sciences, cultural and police studies, history, law, political science, psychology, social services, and sociology. Criminology includes a study of the criminal justice system, which is comprised of all those elements that attempts to manage, punish, and prevent crime such as private and public law enforcement agencies and corrections, the judicial system, and related domains like Customs and Excise, Immigration, and Social Services. Criminology is a program of study pursue primarily by individuals who aspire to a career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in various areas of Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related fields. For example, graduates pursue various positions in such areas as administration, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, government, insurance, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, private and public investigation, the courts, victim services, and young offenders, to name but a few. Some careers and/or employers, however, may require further training beyond that provided by a Criminology program. Furthermore, having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the Criminology/Criminal Justice fields. Graduates can also take on further studies in the field at various institutions, colleges, and universities across Canada, often with advanced credit. Individuals who attain an undergraduate degree in Criminology or Criminal Justice can also apply for graduate and law schools.
