Criminology (Bachelor of Arts/University Degree Completion) - Malaspina University-College

Malaspina University-College's 4-year Criminology (Bachelor of Arts/University Degree Completion) is primarily designed for individuals who aspire to a career, career advancement, for further education in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related fields. Malaspina advises, however, that even though 'the core of the curriculum is centered on justice-related issues, students will find the degree program applies equally to areas in the private sector where research competence, project management, legal analysis and communication skills are essential.' Students will be exposed to the 'conceptual, critical and applied skills to work in fields where a legal/justice focus is beneficial; through a curriculum that focuses on developing their 'professional and applied skills' including 'training in professional ethics, conflict mediation, use of information technology for researching relevant topics, writing, presenting data, and working in small groups on specific tasks.'

Although the Program provides students with a broad liberal arts-based education, including courses from the Humanities and Social Sciences, it more specifically introduces learners 'to criminal law, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and case-law decisions made by the court' and to an examination of 'the three main components of the criminal justice system-police, courts and corrections-that form an organized response to crime.' Students will also analyze 'the trends and correlates of crime, including the influences of age, ethnicity, gender, and social class,' and 'the major explanations for crime' that attempt 'to account for these patterns by looking at historical, individual and social causes.' In the fourth year of the Program, students will have the opportunity apply what they have learned in the classroom by 'either conducting an applied research project or participating in a field placement.' To graduate, students must 'successfully complete the final two years of the degree program with a minimum grade of "C-" for each required course, credit for CRIM 475, and a minimum "C" average overall.'

Prospective students should note that students will not be admitted to the Criminology (Bachelor of Arts/University Degree Completion) program in years 1 or 2. Rather, as a pre-requisite for admission to the Bachelor's program, the first 2 years of study must be completed either by completing 'MalaspinaÆs 2-year Criminology Diploma program, or equivalent courses from B.C. post-secondary institutions such as Camosun College.' Therefore, students will actually be entering the Criminology degree program in year 3. However, 'students in the second year of the Diploma in Criminology program may apply, conditional on successful completion of the required courses by June 1.' Due to the program having limited enrollment, students that 'meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the program.'

Graduates of the Program will be prepared to pursue employment, career advancements, and/or further studies in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related areas. Career-wise, graduates may apply for various positions across Canada in such areas as border or community services, corrections, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, insurance, investigations, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, public administration, Revenue Canada, social work, the courts, and victim services, to name but a few. Graduates may also pursue further educational opportunities in the field. For instance, graduates can apply to various graduate and/or law school across Canada.
