PROGRAM WEBSITE Diploma In Criminology - Kwantlen University College Kwantlen University College's Diploma in Criminology is designed for students aspiring to attain employment, career advancement, skill upgrading, or further education and/or training in Criminology, Criminal Justice or related fields. The Program is interdisciplinary in its approach to the study of Criminology and is focussed 'around a central core of method and theory that provides a foundation for more advanced study of crime and social responses.' Moreover, students will have the 'opportunity to develop abstract logical thinking and critical understanding of the issues, arguments and debates that shape the disciplineĘs character and aims.' Graduates may pursue careers, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related fields. Career-wise, graduates may be employed in various positions across Canada, including working for educational or governmental institutions or for employers in the non-profit or private sector. For example, graduates may work in the areas of crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, insurance, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, Revenue Canada, the courts, victim services, and young offenders, to name but a few. Some careers, however, may require further training, and students should also be aware that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in criminology, criminal justice, and related fields. Graduates can also take on further studies in the field at various institutions across Canada, including colleges, universities, and institutions specializing in the field, like the Justice Institute of British Columbia. Graduates can also transfer into the 3rd year of Kwantlen's 4-year Bachelor in Community Criminal Justice or Bachelor (Criminology Major). Students interested in entering any of these 2 programs 'should contact the Educational Advising' department 'to discuss qualifying courses likely to be required prior to admission.' Furthermore, Kwantlen has a transfer agreement allowing graduates of the Diploma to 'enter the third year of the BA in Criminology at' Simon Fraser University. Students interested in the latter should select their electives from at least one of Criminology 1249, 2204, 2211, 2213, and 2214 and at least one of Computer Science 1100, 1103, Economics 1101, History 1113, 1114, and Political Science 1120. Students interested in transferring to another school after graduation should familiarize themselves with the pre-requisites for admission and the program to which they want to transfer. Many graduates have also continued in other fields 'such as law, social work, social and behavioural sciences, arts and sciences.' To be eligible for admission to Kwantlen, applicants will usually need to be a BC Secondary school graduate, 'or the equivalent from another school system,' or be 'missing only one course for graduation' but 'have passed English 12 or Communications 12 or the equivalent,' or be 19 years of age or older on the first day of classes for the term and not have a high school diploma, or be 17 years of age or older on the first day of classes for the term and 'has not been in regular attendance at a secondary school for a minimum of one year.' The latter category of applicant 'will normally only be accepted into the Adult Basic Education (ABE) or English Language Studies (ELST) program' and admission 'to other programs will be considered on an individual basis.' Applicants who do not meet any of the aforementioned 'admission criteria may be admitted as a Special Admission student and complete up to 12 credits before they must meet the regular admission requirements.' Home Schooled persons are invited to apply but those 'who have not written the BC Provincial Math and English examinations will be required to write KwantlenĘs Math and English Placement tests as part of the evaluation of their application for Special Admission.' Further, students currently enrolled 'in grade 12 in a BC Secondary School may be admitted to Kwantlen to pursue Concurrent Studies.' However, usually only 3 credit hours 'may be applied toward the requirements of a certificate program' and only 6 credit hours 'may be applied toward the requirements of a diploma program.' All applicants must demonstrate English Language proficiency by successfully completing English 12 with at least a "C" grade. The latter requirement may be met via an equivalent means including specified courses or programs at University College, specific courses or programs outside of Kwantlen, or an approved English language proficiency examination.
