Diploma in Legal Studies - Douglas College

Douglas College's 2-year Diploma in Criminology is designed for students aspiring to attain employment, career advancement, skill upgrading, or further education and/or training in Criminology, Criminal Justice or related fields. Through a broad, liberal arts-based program that includes courses in Criminology, English, Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology with opportunities for elective classes in Anthropology, Geography, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Political Science, students will study 'the central issues in Criminology and the structures and processes found in the Canadian justice system,' and 'learn to appreciate the complex problems encountered in the criminal justice field.'

Graduates of the Program will be prepared to pursue employment, career advancements, and/or further studies in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related areas. Career-wise, graduates may apply for positions across Canada in such areas as border or community services, corrections, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, insurance, investigations, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, public administration, Revenue Canada, social work, the courts, and victim services, to name but a few. Graduates can, for instance, become bailiffs, corrections officers, detectives, parole officers, police officers, probation officers, researchers, and social workers. Some careers, however, may require further training, and students should also be aware that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in criminology, criminal justice, and related fields.

Graduates may also pursue further educational opportunities at various institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada, often with advanced standing. Students intending to transfer to a university, upon graduation, 'to complete a degree in criminal justice or criminology should check with that university for their requirements,' and 'choose electives' accordingly. For example, students who want to transfer to Simon Fraser University's Bachelor in Criminology program should not only complete the required courses for the Diploma but also Criminology 2251, 2252, 2254, and 2261 and Psychology 1200 and 2300.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must either 'have completed BC secondary school graduation in any program or have completed the equivalent in another school system,' or 'lack one course for BC secondary school graduation or the equivalent in another school system,' or be '19 years of age or older on the first day of the first semester of attendance,' or be 'at least 17 years of age on the first day of the first semester of attendance and' have 'not been enrolled at a school for at least one year,' or be 'a special needs student and' have 'completed a certificate or equivalent from a special program and' have 'been in school for 12 years.' Furthermore, all applicants must demonstrate English Language proficiency by successfully completing English 12 with at least a "C" grade. The latter requirement may be met via an equivalent means including specified courses at Douglas College, specific courses or programs outside of the College, or an approved English language proficiency examination.
