PROGRAM WEBSITE Criminology - College of New Caledonia Combining theoretical and practical education, Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning's 2-semester Law Firm Profile - Office Administration certificate program is primarily designed for students interested in a career in law office administration. The Program will equip learners with 'theoretical knowledge of legal practice and procedures in different areas of law' as well as with the practical abilities to use 'specialized, legal software programs such as Teraview, PCLaw, and Quicklaw.' The ultimate goal of the Program is to train participants to successfully 'co-ordinate and manage' the basic tasks one will be charged with in the field of law office administration. Such tasks include 'ensuring compliance with statutory limitations, procedural practices, and filing/registering provisions; drafting and preparing legal documents, instruments and accounts; liaising with clients, lawyers and government and court officials in the execution of legal matters.' Moreover, during the second semester, students will have opportunities 'to apply their new knowledge, skills and behaviours' to real-world situations via a 'seven-week, paid work term.' The latter will take place in 'prominent national and international law firms in Toronto' with which the College has an educational partnership. These firms include 'Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP; Blaney McMurtry LLP; Borden Ladner Gervais LLP; Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP; Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP; Goodman and Carr LLP; Goodmans LLP; Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP; Lang Michener LLP, McCarthy Tetrault LLP; McMillan Binch Mendelsohn LLP; Minden Gross Grafstein & Greenstein LLP; Torkin Manes LLP; and Torys LLP.' Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal administration and related fields. In fact, 'graduates are recruited regularly by law firms, government agencies, and private industry for positions such as legal assistants and legal administrative assistants.' Traditionally, the most consistent employers of graduates have been 'from the field placement employer; who often offer graduates positions 'upon completion of the program.' Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, like paralegal, and those who qualify 'may be eligible to apply their academic credits toward further study at many postsecondary institutions.' To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants should possess an 'Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with courses from College (C), University/ College (M), University (U) pathways, or OSSD at or above the general level, or equivalent,' credit for either 'ENG4C or ENG4U, or Grade 12 English at or above the general level,' or 2 'years of postsecondary education or business experience or a combination thereof.' Applicants must also submit 'an up-to-date resumT ' and attend 'an information/assessment session, which includes career and program information; completion of a writing sample;' and 'keyboard proficiency test using the touch method' on which prospective students must achieve at least '30 words per minute.' Applicants should note that 'grade and/or course requirements are used in the selection process for all programs...If applicants are enrolled in Grade 12 required subjects...in the second semester (February to June), Grade 11 marks will be used. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
