Toxicology Research Areas and Disciplines

Research in Canada includes a broad array of toxicological topics. This includes chemical toxicology, exposure to environmental contaminants, cancer-induced DNA damage, and analytical toxicology.

Protein-drug interactions (eg. chemotherapy), biotransformation of drugs, and environmental contaminants (eg. drinking water contamination) are also studied. Persistent organic pollutants such as perfluorinated acids, brominated flame retardants, and persistent oil sands by-products are studied by those researching various environmental contaminants and their effects on humans and the environment.

Toxicologists are also developing new ways to determine the harmful effects of chemical and physical agents and the amount (dosage) that will cause these effects. They are designing controlled studies to determine the conditions under which they can be used safely. For example, toxicologists are working with manufacturers to determine the safe and acceptable levels of certain chemicals in drinking containers such as metal and plastic water bottles.
