Employment Resources and Professions Available to Nursing Graduates

Nurses tend to find careers in three major areas: healthcare, education, and administration. Those in healthcare work closely with health care teams in a variety of community clinics, private homes, nursing homes, homes for the aged and geriatric, rehabilitative, medical, surgical, and obstetrical units. Those who wish a career in education work at the post-secondary level teaching nursing students theory and clinical based practice. Those in administration assume responsibility for leading other members of the health care team and for coordinating services.

The major venue for healthcare nurses is hospitals such as in emergency, pediatrics, mental health, or oncology. Others work in home care, where they perform a wide variety of tasks such as home dialysis, diabetes management, and palliative care.

Nurses in education can work in various clinics on topics such as sex education, self esteem, addictions, and obesity issues. They can also roam various industries to advocate healthy programs such as exercise, health benefits, and developing safe working conditions. Nurses can also teach nursing and related subjects at the post-secondary level.

Administrative nurses can be responsible for creating and refining policies at the local, regional, and national level, for private companies or for government agencies. This can include things such as recommended food intakes, smoking cessation, addictions treatment guidelines, and child abuse issues.

A degree in nursing can also be used for a stepping-stone for a career in medicine, pharmacy, psychology, social work, or law.
