Studying Neurosurgery in Canada | |
Students take foundation courses in both general surgery and neurology, and then start to take neurosurgical courses. This includes neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. Students learn about the various neurological disorders that can be treated by surgery, such as certain types of strokes, spinal trauma, and tumors. They also learn about the principles of skull fracture management and how to recognize emergency spinal conditions.
Topics in epilepsy that students learn are the various classifications of epilepsy, options of medical treatment, causes of epilepsy, and common types of surgery such as a lobectomy or selective amygdalohippocampectomy.
Head and neck cancer courses are also taught, specifically their epidemiology, symptoms, and possible treatment methods.
Practical learning in the management of cervical spinal fractures is taught on an observation basis initially. The application of tongs, placement of halos, and the principles of closed reduction are discussed. The insertion of ventricular drains, arterial lines, and shunts is also taught.
Proficiency in the use of neurosurgical equipment is also taught. This includes the microscope, Jackson spinal table, and image guidance. Certain surgical procedures such as nerve biopsies and removal of tumors are also discussed and eventually practiced by the student (both hands-on and robotic).
Interpersonal skills with patients are an important part of neurosurgical training, as many surgeries are unsuccessful and death or severe impairment can often result. They learn to work with patients and families who exhibit anger and confusion related to the surgery, and also learn about issues related to gender, ethnicity, and religious background. Bioethical issues such as do-not-resuscitate orders, informed consent, and quality of life are also discussed.
