Midwifery Research Areas and Disciplines

Midwives often collaborate with other healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, and social workers. They work together on current midwife issues such as appropriate at-home delivery methods (eg. water births, drugs vs. no drugs, etc). They are also working to develop alternatives to intervention during birthing pains. This includes refining techniques such as massage, relaxation therapy, hypnosis, and breathing exercises.

Midwives also participate in healthcare planning and policy-making at local, national, and international levels. For example, they are involved in research to demonstrate the effectiveness of midwifery over traditional hospital care, as well as the health and economic benefits of allowing women with low-risk pregnancies to deliver at home.
