Studying Medical Laboratory in Canada

Students learn to analyze and diagnose human illness through the analysis of human tissues such as blood, urine, and sputum. They begin with the theory behind human tissues: courses in cell biology, histology, microbiology, and microscopy. Once the basics are established students then take more advanced courses in biological laboratory techniques such as sterile technique, wet-mounting, culture and tissue growth, and contamination and biohazard disposal.

These programs have a strong hands-on component where students can practice and refine their techniques in a laboratory setting. They learn how to analyze various tissues and recognize human infections or other pathological problems. As well, they learn analytical and clinical toxicology, clinical chemistry, and transfusion science. Practical techniques learned include performing bone marrow counts, liver function tests, semen analysis, and complete blood counts.

Non-science courses in ethics and professionalism are encouraged and often required at some point. Students also learn about forensic pathology and the laws surrounding forensic science.
