Studying Health Informatics in Canada

Students in health informatics learn to incorporate knowledge of both information technology and healthcare systems. They acquire skills which allow them to design, develop, modify, and test software for healthcare applications.

Students learn to analyze and model data, develop healthcare databases, and apply different computer medical-imaging techniques. Students learn to use algorithms and health informatics methods for hospitals, schools, healthcare agencies and public health departments.

Students learn about computer programming using a scripting language such as Python. They also learn software development techniques for programming and software development in a procedural language. They study source code management, testing strategies, debugging, and basic scripting techniques. Students also learn the various object-oriented software design methodologies, user-oriented interface design, the structure of healthcare information systems, data security, and privacy in healthcare systems.

Group projects, mentoring, and field trips augment classroom studies. The use of computers is highly integrated in all learning.
