What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) is surgery to correct a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws, and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. OM surgeons perform procedures such as removing impacted teeth, neck cysts, treating oral cancer, jaw fractures, lip reconstruction, and various cosmetic surgeries.

OMS is considered a dental specialty in Canada but many OMS graduates opt for an additional medical degree so they can obtain hospital and operating room privileges.

About Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

OMS is a branch of dentistry and is similar to surgery, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology.
