Many ecologists do some form of research. They can do either laboratory or field research for the government or academia. They can work as field technicians, environmental consultants, park wardens, interpreters, or conservation officers. Common organizations include Canadian Wildlife Service, Parks Canada, and Department of Fisheries and Oceans. For those with advanced degrees employment is also available as project managers, research administrators, or natural resource managers.
Ecologists can also work as teachers in the secondary or post-secondary school systems. A further degree in education will be necessary for high-school teaching, and a graduate degree will be necessary for post-secondary teaching.
Private industries such as mining and forestry also employ ecologists. They can work performing ecosystem environmental impact assessments for development projects like outfalls, ports, pipelines, and energy projects. They can also work with engineers to develop mitigation strategies for pollution and habitat destruction.
A degree in ecology is an excellent starting point for careers in business, environmental law, and journalism (for example, writing about environmental issues). It is also an acceptable degree for admission to veterinary school and medicine.
