Studying Biophysics in Canada

Foundation courses in biology and physics are necessary first, and then courses in biophysics are available. Topics such as medical imaging (theory behind atomic and nuclear physics, and electromagnetic waves), biomechanics (elasticity of tissues, joint replacement, movement, head injuries, orthopedic implants), and the physics of blood flow are available. Advanced courses such as radiobiology and radionuclides and digital image processing are available to upper-level students.

Students also take other physics courses designed to give a broader background into biophysics. This includes soft-matter condensed physics, quantum mechanics, and scientific computing. They also take mathematical courses in statistics and probability.

Practical laboratory courses in medical imaging (how to use x-rays, ultrasound, and MRI for diagnosis of disease), mechanical properties of bone and arteries, and cardiovascular fluid dynamics are offered. Laboratory courses in physics include studies in atomic physics, neutron physics, optics, spectroscopy, and mechanics. Seminars in recent advances in biophysics are available and graduate students are expected to participate.
