Studying Bioinformatics in Canada

Students begin with basic courses in mathematics and computer science in order to learn programming and databases and get the necessary background to understand subsequent courses. They also take courses in genetics, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and cell biology. They learn how cells operate and how information is transferred between cells and generations. Studies in protein structure and analyses allow students to examine the stages and principles of protein folding. Students apply current protein analysis and advanced visualization software and evaluate experimental and computational methods of protein structure. Students also explore the topic of protein-based drug design.

Computer science studies include programming languages and methodology, file and database management, and software engineering. Students learn about computational tools and databases used in the collection and analysis of sequence data and other analytical data from high-throughput molecular biology studies.

Skills learned include problem solving and analytical skills, and becoming familiar with the types of computer software that are commonly used in the field. They also learn to work with a high degree of accuracy and be willing to work on highly focused projects that may last several years.

Seminars in bioinformatics are also available. Students get the chance to learn about current advances such as comparative genomics, pharmacogenomics, microbial genomics, systems biology, and environmental bioinformatics. A major part of a bioinformatics program involves working on team-based projects writing novel bioinformatics tools.
