Atomic and Molecular Physics Research Areas and Disciplines

Research is often performed in collaboration with colleagues around the world. New classes of molecular clusters are being investigated such as metallo-carbohedrenes. These clusters have a potential use as new electronic and optical materials as well as catalysts. Work is ongoing to investigate their molecular properties and reactivity. Researchers are using these clusters to develop new materials in nanotechnology. Another potential use is to develop and use water clusters for capturing aerosol particles in the atmosphere, with the aim of mitigating pollution, climate change, and cloud seeding.

Experimental researchers are working with resonance optical lattices and other light traps, with the aim of developing ways to trap and cool atoms at high densities. These atoms can be used in a variety of ways, including creating and studying Bose-Einstein condensates, studying bosons, and quantum computation.

Optical physics research is mainly concerned with the development of new types of lasers and fibre optics. New developments in materials, superconductors, and mirrors are being used to create faster and more efficient tools to improve communications and computer processing speeds.
