Atmospheric Science and Meteorology Research Areas and Disciplines

Atmospheric scientists are working to assess the threat of global warming by collecting and analyzing data on worldwide temperature trends. They are attempting to determine how changes in water vapor, clouds, and snow might alter the warming trend. They are also studying interactions among the atmosphere and the oceans, the polar ice caps, and plants and animals. Meteorologists collaborate with atmospheric chemists and computer modelers to study pollutants for air quality. As well, some are looking closely at the causes of droughts, floods, and their impacts on agriculture, as these can impact food production.

Several atmospheric research groups have studied microbursts with radar, instrumented aircraft, and other research tools, and are using this information for detection and warning systems that are being installed at major airports to provide safer air travel.

Meteorologists who are studying severe storms have developed a new radar system that detects severe storms such as tornadoes and hurricanes. The high-resolution data from these systems will provide better warnings of dangerous weather.
