Employment Resources and Professions Available to Astronomy and Astrophysics Graduates

Traditional careers working with telescopes are available. Graduates can work as technical staff at observatories in exotic locations such as Hawaii and Chile. They can also work in collaboration with engineers and computer scientists to design radio, millimetre, optical, and infrared telescopes

However, most astronomy graduates work in non-traditional jobs. Many work in the computing industry where their software knowledge is transferable to other fields. They can also find work in the technological, health industries, aerospace, and atmospheric science. Government agencies such as the Canadian Space Agency or the Department of National Defense will hire astronomers.

Many astronomers work in education, where they hold teaching positions at colleges and universities, combining teaching and research. Others work as outreach experts at science centers, museums, and planetaria.

Astronomers are also employed by other industries due to their scientific and mathematical education, and their skills in analysis and problem-solving. These careers include remote sensing (eg. geology), medical imaging, science communication (eg. public relations), and financial analysis (eg. banks and stock markets).

A degree in astronomy can also be used for further education in astrophysics, physics, or engineering.
