Studying Applied Mathematics in Canada

Applied mathematics students learn to apply a variety of mathematical and computational tools to solve problems in the context of science and engineering. Calculus is of fundamental importance, since it provides the foundation for most mathematical models in science and engineering. Students learn the skills of problem solving and critical thinking needed to solve problems in applied science and everyday activities.

One area of learning is in continuum mechanics, where students investigate the movement of matter on scales larger compared to typical distances between particles. They use this to study a range of phenomena, including the flow of air and water, rockslides, avalanches, blood flow, and galaxy evolution.

Students also study control theory, where they learn about feedback to influence the behaviour of a system in order to achieve a desired goal. Practical exercises in engineering and technology include learning about control of spacecraft and smart fluid technology. As well, students examine biological examples such as an animal's sense of balance, or the homeostasis of a living organism.

Students also study dynamical systems using differential equations. They study chaos and nonlinear theory that can be used to explain certain phenomena such as weather prediction, economics, and population growth.

Computer simulations are an important part of applied mathematics studies. Students learn how to develop fast and accurate algorithms for solving a wide variety of problems on computers.
