University of Toronto Law SchoolMooting and Clinical ProgramsThe Faculty additionally offers many experiential learning opportunities through which students may develop and hone their practical skills, such as their respective advocacy, argumentative, and lawyering abilities, and deal directly with the dynamics of the legal world. Such opportunities are available primarily via mooting and clinical work. First year students may part-take in either voluntary or competitive moots; there are three advocacy competitions for first year students including the Fasken Campbell Godfrey International Law Moot Court Competition and moots against students of Osgoode Hall Law School and McGill Law School.
Upper year students, however, are presented with a wide range of national and international competitions including the Bertha Wilson Moot, Davies, Ward, Phillips & Vineberg LLP Securities Law Moot, Frank M. Callaghan Memorial Moot, Gale Cup Moot, Laskin Moot, and Phillip C. Jessup international Moot. Students may also work at one of several clinics operated by the Faculty including Advocates for Injured Workers, Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples, International Human Rights, and Downtown Legal Service. The latter has satellite clinics that include the Council Fire, Meal-trans, Out of the Cold, and Street Outreach Services.
Upper year students may earn course credit for working at a clinic while first year students may volunteer on a non-credit basis. Students may also work for one of four student-run journals, and 'senior editors of these journals receive academic credit for their work.' The journals include the Journal of International Law and International Relations, University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review, University of Toronto Journal of Law and Equality, and University of Toronto Indigenous Law Journal. Students who participate in the Faculty of Law Review are eligible to receive the Tory Summer Fellowships.
