PROGRAM WEBSITE Legal Assistant Certificate - Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Southern Alberta Institute of Technology's part-time Legal Assistant Certificate provides students with 'the latest information on important legal topics and obtain insights into a wide variety of specialized areas of law.' The Program affords learners who want to further their legal knowledge and increase their employment opportunities with a flexible opportunity enabling them 'to continue to work and earn while' they learn. To complete the Program, students must complete 1 required courses, Introduction to Law, and 4 'law course electives' chosen from Commercial Law, Corporate Law, Credit and Collection Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Legal Resources, Litigation Law I and II, Oil and Gas Law, Real Estate Law I and II, Securities Law, and Wills and Estates Law. Students will have 5 years to complete their respective programs. Students who want to advance their education in the area of legal assistance will be allowed to apply the courses they successfully complete, except for the Securities Law course, towards the Institute's 2-year Legal Assistant Diploma. The Institute advises students who intent to pursue the Diploma program to make a formal declaration' of their intentions. This Declaration can be made 'at the time of registration' for the Certificate. Students who do earn a Diploma may then transfer to Athabasca University with 'two full years' of advanced credits towards the 4-year Bachelor of Professional Arts (Governance, Law and Management). Courses for the Certificate program may also be taken on an individual basis, without formally registering for the Certificate. Graduates of the Certificate Program may pursue various employment opportunities as legal assistants or paralegals. For example, graduates can apply for positions in law firms, court registry offices, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, oil and gas companies, private industry, and real estate offices. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.
