Southern Alberta Institute of Technology's 2-year Legal Assistant Diploma program, which is accredited by the Alberta Association of Professional Paralegals, readies 'students to work as legal assistants and trains students in many different areas of law. The latter include corporate and commercial, family, credit and collections, criminal, legal resources, litigation, oil and gas, real estate, and wills and estates. Students should note that in order to progress within the program, an SPGPA and/or a CPGPA of 2.0 or higher per semester must be achieved; to be eligible 'for graduation, students must pass all courses and attain a CPGPA of 2.0 or better.'

For example, graduates can apply for positions in law firms, court registry offices, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, oil and gas companies, private industry, and real estate offices. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, for instance, has a transfer agreement with Athabasca University. Through this Agreement, graduates of the Legal Assistant Diploma program may transfer to Athabasca with 'two full years' of advanced credits towards the 4-year Bachelor of Professional Arts (Governance, Law and Management).

To be eligible for admission to the Legal Assistant Diploma program, applicants will typically require at possess an 'Alberta High School Diploma or equivalent with at least 50% in English Language Arts 30-1 or English Language Arts 30-2 or equivalents.'
