Legal Assistance - Grant MacEwan College

Combining theoretical and practical education, Grant MacEwan College's 2-year Investigations and Security Management program is designed primarily for individuals aspiring to a career, career advancement, or further education in 'private investigations, or government and corporate investigations and security management.' The Program will provide learners with 'a well-rounded, liberal arts education aimed at developing individuals who are leaders, self-starters, effective decision-makers, and able to adapt to new environments.' More specifically, students will be equipped with 'a foundation of knowledge in risk management, loss prevention, investigative techniques, law, sociology, psychology and emergency management,' and learn about such issues as crime, fraud, security, and violence. Students will further develop their abilities to 'conduct research, deliver presentations, work in teams, recognize gender and cultural issues, adhere to a professional code of ethics, and apply critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills.'

During the second year of the Program, students will be able to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via 'two supervised field placements.' The latter will also enable participants to learn, first hand, 'the ins and outs of bylaw enforcement, private investigations, investigative and security agencies (private, public and government), fraud investigations, customs and immigration, and corporate security.'

Graduates of the Program can pursue careers and/or further education in Investigations and Security Management or related fields. Career-wise, employment opportunities for graduates exist in virtually every industry including, but not limited to, 'investigative and security agencies (private, public and government) such as bylaw enforcement, private investigation, corporate security and fraud investigation units.' On average, the starting salary in policing average about $30, 000.00 to $42,000.00 per year while in Investigations and Security Management fields the average annual starting wage ranges from approximately $30,000.00 to$40,000.00. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work performed, individuals possessing a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in Investigations and Security Management and related areas.

Graduates may also pursue further studies in Investigations and Security Management or related fields at various universities, colleges, and institutes across Canada. Graduates may, for instance, take advantage of one of the Colleges existing transfer agreements. The latter exist with Athabasca University, which allows '2 year transferability into the Bachelor of Professional Arts - Criminal Justice (offered on-site at MacEwan's City Centre Campus),' University of Great Falls, Montana, which allows '2 year transfer to the Bachelor of Arts or Science in Criminal Justice, and University of Alberta, which allows 'up to 1 year transferability to the Bachelor of Arts.' Graduates may also transfer into Grant MacEwan's Bachelor of Applied Human Services with up to 2 years of advanced credit.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must 'present an Alberta high school diploma (or equivalent) by the beginning of the intake term.' Prospective students who do not possess a secondary school diploma but who will 'be 18 years of age or older and out of full-time high school for at least one year by the beginning of the intake term' can apply through "mature student status." Furthermore, all applicants will need 'to submit a written professional and career profile' demonstrating 'an understanding of the role of practitioners in the Investigations and Security Management field, awareness of career opportunities and effective written communication skills.' Applicants that are conditionally accepted must also 'submit a current clear Security Clearance before the beginning of the intake term.'

All applicants who 'do not present ELA 30-1 with a minimum grade of 65 percent or English 30-2 with a minimum grade of 75 percent' must complete a skills appraisal, typically 'by the beginning of the intake term.' If the latter is required, 'applicants must successfully complete the writing portion AND be eligible to enter ENGL 111 OR must complete any developmental coursework with a minimum grade of C-.' Applicants must also provide proof that they possess a level of English language proficiency acceptable to the College. This proof may be in the form of, for example, 'high school or post-secondary transcripts or proof of successful completion of standardized language evaluation,' such as the TOEFL.
