Profile of Career College/Trade School
Touch of Culture Native Training Institute is a private career college where First Nations People are trained in Fashion Design and Assembly of Clothing keeping in mind Native American history and culture. The college is located on the Capilano Reserve (Indian Reservation) in North Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. It is accredited by the PCTIA. Touch of Culture Native Training Institute was founded in 1988 by Pam Baker, who wanted to create a platform to display Native American culture. She started workshops and trained Aboriginal women and teens in fashion design to enable them to discover how modern technology and style can be blended with traditional values and symbols to make beautiful clothing. Students at Touch of Culture Native Training Institute are taught sewing and design. They learn to make custom textile pieces, contemporary pieces and couture pieces. The college uses the latest sewing equipment and also gives training in the traditional methods of creating clothes. Students are involved in creating beginners as well as advanced projects in teams. The course includes modules on design, pattern making, beading, embroidery, research, fashion forecasting, sewing for manufacturing, designing sportswear, and couture. Graduates of the course can work as fashion designers, seamstresses, or tailors either with a business or as a freelancer. They also have the option of selling their handicrafts and clothes in local stores.
