The Personal Support Worker Program was developed by the Ontario Government in 1997 to supply long-term care and support to its senior citizens. The program replaces Health Care Aide, Home Support Worker Level 1-3 and Personal Attendant Respite Worker. It helps the student to develop personal skills as well as occupational skills that are necessary in order to care for people of the society. The students are trained in different health sectors such as Health Care agencies, Long-term care facilities, Homes, Hospitals, Schools, Day programs, Private duty, Hospices, Group homes and Social and family services. A Personal Support Worker is needed to assist in ambulance, mechanical and physical lifts, and personal hygiene, observe and report changes in behavior and lifestyle, take temperature, pulse, pressure, check motion exercises and other rehabilitative measures etc. Students are trained in every aspect of the health care sector. The objective of the program is to train the students to understand about the individuality of a person. It educates the student to respect and understand the needs and rights of individuals. Students are also brought forward to the role and practice of Personal Support Workers during the course. They are taught work relationships, time and stress management skills as well. Communication and Interpersonal skills are a must while serving society. Therefore, the program focuses on teaching how to maintain effective relationships with the client. Students are placed in an internship, which is mandatory for 8 weeks. It is 280 hours long and is in a Long-Term Care Facility and Community. The course consists of a comprehensive outline that is taught to the student by practical means. It helps to create strong individuals with a desire to serve the society.
