Institution ProfileUmeå University was founded in 1965 and is located in Umeå, Sweden. The university is the fifth largest university in the country and caters to 29000 students. The university is home to the Iksu Sports Center, which is one of the largest exercise facilities in Europe. It is also home to the Umeå Plant Science Centre, which has been named the best research environment for young bioscientists outside of America.
Umeå University offers a number of Master's programs and single subject courses for a wide range of departments in the areas of the arts, medicine, social sciences, teacher education as well as science and technology. The university is also open to exchange students and offers a number of courses in English, to cater to the needs of students from other countries. The university also has a distance education program as well as a summer university program, where a number of special courses are provided during the summer vacation period. Research projects are also done on twelve main branches of study.
Umeå University has an extensive student services cell that provides guidance for students looking to plan ahead for higher education or a career. Students can get help in choosing a study plan and deciding which courses to take. Counseling is also available for students with disabilities. The university also holds a number of special cultural events via the Culture on Campus project, which is open to everyone at the university.
