Institution ProfileThe Umeå University - Academy of Fine Arts had humble beginnings, starting out in an old factory in Umeå, Sweden. Founded in 1987, the academy now has a series of workshops, all equipped to deal with various aspects of the fine arts, from woodwork to graphic design. All students are trained in three main aspects, namely the technical, practical and theoretical.
The Umeå University - Academy of Fine Arts is primarily focused on its Master in Fine Arts program, which spans five years of study. The university takes in 12 new students each year and currently there are 600 students enrolled. The program focuses on critical analysis and the ability to view contexts and backgrounds from different perspectives. The role of the artist is also explored, from a legal, social, and economic point of view and students are equipped to work as professional artists, either at a national or international level.
At Umeå University - Academy of Fine Arts, each student is given their own studio space and works with two tutors. The classes are arranged in such a way, so as to encourage constructive criticism and practical ways of self help. The academy is also involved in three main research projects, namely visible blindness, research & display, and research processes in art. A number of postgraduate courses are also available. The academy is also home to Galleri 60, which hosts regular exhibitions of artists like Thuy Nguyen Thi Bich and Rosa Marie Frang.
