Institution ProfileThe Karolinska Institute is a university also popularly known as Royal Caroline Institute. It is one of the largest medical universities in Europe. The university opened its doors for students in the year 1810. However, the university got its current name and format only in the year 1968. The main campus of the university is located in Solna, which is just outside Stockholm.
The Karolinska Institute runs a wide range of medical courses through its three campuses. These campuses include the Solna campus (which is the main campus), the KI North campus, and the Huddinge campus.
The Karolinska Institute is organized into thirty nine research centers that are widely spread all over the three campuses. There are nine departments of research in the Solna campus, eight in the KI North campus and twelve in the Huddinge campus.
The two main hospitals of the Karolinska Institute are Danderyd Hospital and Söder Hospital. The Söder Hospital is located in the Huddinge campus while the Danderyd Hospital is located in the KI North campus.
