Institution ProfileThe idea of University of Tromsø was launched in 1918 by Hans A Meyer, who was a politician and a businessman from Mo i Rana. In 1968, the Norwegian parliament approves the idea of establishing a university at Tromsø. In 1972, University of Tromsø was opened in the Tromsø Cathedral by King Olav V. The campus was built in 1978 at Brevika. In 1998, the university celebrated its thirtieth anniversary.
Located at a latitude of 70 degrees north, University of Tromsø is correctly known as the world’s northernmost university. Presently, the university has around 6000 students and 1800 staff and faculty members. Though it is a small university, it offers wide variety of subject to students. Currently, students can choose from more than hundred study programs.
At the University of Tromsø students can pursue three-year bachelor degree programs, five-year integrated masters programs, six-year professional studies, one-year courses, or two-year masters programs. The university has six faculties-
·Faculty of Humanities
·Faculty of Law
·Faculty of Science
·Faculty of Medicine
·Faculty of Social Sciences
·Norwegian College of Fisheries Sciences
Besides the six faculties, the university also has four centers. These centers offer research work in four specialist fields- Artic research, Environment and development studies, Saami, indigenous and minority questions, and Women’s perspective in research.
University of Tromsø offers research and education programs at bachelor, masters, and PhD levels. It has used its physical location to its advantage in the field of Artic research. Overall, one can say that the university has been a successful regional policy experiment.
