Institution ProfileUniversity of Oslo was founded in 1811. Today, it is known as the largest and the oldest university in Norway. In 1813, there were only 16 students and 6 teachers. Today, it has around 30000 students and 4600 faculty and staff members. The academic calendar of University of Oslo is divided into two semesters- Autumn Semester and Spring Semester.
University of Oslo has eight faculties today. Faculty of Theology is the oldest one and Faculty of Education is the youngest. Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, and Faculty of Social Sciences are the other six faculties at the university.
University of Oslo offers more than hundred study programs at the bachelor and masters level. Here at the university, students can find one-year programs, three-year bachelor degree programs, five-year master degree programs, one and a half-year to two-year master degree programs, and six-year professional study programs. So the choice of study programs is not limited for students at the university.
Furthermore, international students can choose from 800 courses and more than 40 master degree programs to study in. However, none of the bachelor degree programs are taught in English. Some of the master degree programs offered in English include Maritime Law, Special Needs Education, Health Economics, Intercontextual Theology, and East Asian Linguistics.
The university is known for its research contributions. Four Nobel Prizes say a great deal about university’s commitment towards research. It has established several institutional research areas, some of which have been developed into national research programmes.
