Institution ProfileUniversity Centre in Svalbard is administered and managed by its proprietors the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. The institution works in close relationship with various other Universities of Norway. The programs offered by the institution are unique and structured to meet the needs of the students and the community. The student body comprises of almost an equal mix of Norwegian and international students. The students do not have to worry about tuition fees as no such fee is collected and English is the medium of instruction.
University Centre in Svalbard has 20 fulltime faculty members and about 21 assistant faculty members. The students also get to attend lectures and seminars offered by renowned experts from all parts of the world. The institution is also involved with various research and development projects many of which are being conducted in collaboration with other institutions. The institution has contacts and developed relationships with many commercial establishments in the Artic.
University Centre in Svalbard offers Master's degree programs only in cooperation with other Universities, as it does not have the authority to grant such degrees. Classroom activities, laboratory work and field activities are carried out in a balanced manner ensuring that the students make the maximum from their opportunity to work with nature as their laboratory. Students can also take up general Artic survival courses. The institution is a member of the University of the Arctic.
