Institution ProfileSámi University College and Nordic Sámi Institute is Norway's only higher educational institution dedicated to upholding the traditions, language and culture of the Saami people. The medium of instruction at this institution is Saami. Students and instructors at the institution are well versed in the language and are mostly bi-lingual. The institution aims to promote Saami culture, hopes to spread awareness of Saami as an academic language.
Sámi University College is affiliated with the Nordic Sami Institute. The institution offers students the chance to take up programs in 4 areas of studies. They can choose from 26 subjects. There are 50 staff members with 30 of them being well-qualified, trained instructors. Students can take up teacher-training programs and they can also take up programs in the field of journalism. International students who wish to graduate in the various programs have to be fluent in the Saami Language.
The Nordic Sámi Institute was established in 1973 and is a part of the Nordic Council of Ministers. The institution is involved in research and aims to promote the Saami culture and to preserve the identity of the Saami people.
