English language section of Oslo School of Architecture and Design
Type of Higher Education Institution: University
Institution ProfileThe Oslo School of Architecture was established in Oslo to help students complete their architecture degrees after the Second World War. Some students were not able to complete their courses because war broke out and this school helped them to do so later. Before that there was only one way to get a degree in architecture and that was the Norwegian Polytechnic at Trondheim. The college was established as an independent school in 1961 when it broke away from the Norwegian Arts and Crafts School. The school added the Institute of Industrial Design in 1996 and in 2003 it renamed itself the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.
The college offers three international Master’s programmes. These are the Master of Architecture, Master of Industrial Design and Master of Landscape Architecture. The first two programmes are of five years duration each with the first three years being treated as the foundation level. There are no Bachelor’s degrees. The third programme is a two year course. The post-graduate courses were added in 1981. These courses are taught in the areas of Interaction Design, Architectural Heritage and Urbanism. About fifty international students get admission every year.
The students of the Oslo School of Architecture and Design have an active campus life. There is a student’s union, a film club and a student pub. The pub is used for many social engagements and celebrations.
