Institution ProfileThe Norwegian Teacher Academy was established in 1966 in Bergen. It consists of two schools. These are the School of Education and Religion and the College of Teacher Education. The academy is a privately owned university college, which is owned by six Christian organizations, belonging to the Church of Norway. The courses and exams are certified by the Ministry of Education and Research in Norway. The college aims to offer an alternate type of education rather than the education provided by state universities.
The Norwegian Teacher Academy provides academic as well as professional programs in Intercultural Studies, Education, and Religious Education and Theology. The college also conducts a lot of research work in improving the educational system in schools and institutions in Norway at all levels. A new undergraduate department was started in 1996, aiming to provide teacher’s training for the primary and secondary school level in the country. This is the College of Teacher Education. The college also offers further training courses to enhance the skills and knowledge of experienced teachers.
The Intercultural Studies course is offered at the Bachelor’s level only. The Education and Religious Education programs are offered at Bachelor as well as Master’s level. All students of the Norwegian Teacher Academy can apply for loans and grants under certain conditions. An achievement of the college in recent years has been the introduction of its own publishing house, NLA-Forlaget.
