Both Helgeland and Nordland Counties are known for their large number of small rural schools. There are many research projects that are conducted at Nesna University College which are based on work in these small rural schools. The experiences gained from teaching in tiny rural schools have proven to be helpful in "differentiated" teaching of multicultural groups of students. Nesna University College has an amiable atmosphere where students and staffs mingle freely and always try to help each other out. The students develop lifelong friendships here. Nesna University College is one of the oldest institutions that impart professional education in Nordland County. It was set up in 1918 as a Teacher Training College in order to improve the level of education and enhance the status of the people in the region. The college is basically involved in imparting education to teachers for pre-school, primary as well as lower secondary education. The college has a strong traditional base in terms of professional education. Nesna University College boasts of about 1200 full-time and part-time students at present. Even though it is a tiny college, it is considered as one of the most crucial employers in the region.
