Institution Profile

Founded in 1927, the Barratt Due Institute of Music is based in Norway. The institute offers a number of music instruction courses at the bachelor and master degree levels. Further education courses are also provided. All study programs follow the credit system.

The Barratt Due Institute of Music offers a four year bachelor degree program in music performance which is worth 240 credits. Students must pursue a core subject of study as well as two areas of specialization. These are specialization in performance and voice/instrumental tuition with practical/theoretical teacher training. These specialization courses are pursued in the final year and require in-depth study.

Students who are interested in getting a master degree at the Barratt Due Institute of Music can pursue a course in music performance on a solo instrument. The course material is largely based on the curriculum provided by the Norwegian Academy of Music. A great deal of emphasis is placed on developing one's creativity and being able to communicate effectively. Students are also taught the importance of professional independence. All prospective postgraduate students must attend an audition prior to admission.

A number of further education programs are also available at the Barratt Due Institute of Music. These are mainly geared towards music teachers at the lower secondary, primary and pre-school level. A two year part time study program is also provided for voice and instrument teachers. This course focuses on music theory as well as theories of teaching practice.
