Institution ProfileThe University of Lapland was founded on March 1, 1979. The university offers a variety of degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in a variety of subject areas through its five Faculties. These faculties include the faculty of Art and Design, the faculty of Business and Tourism, the faculty of Education, the faculty of Law, the faculty of Social Sciences.
Apart from the five faculties, there are six other Units in the University of Lapland. These units include Arctic Centre, Department of Research Methodology, Language Centre, Library, Meri-Lappi Institute (Kemi), and Regional Services of the University of Lapland.
At present, over four thousand graduate students are enrolled in various full time courses in the University of Lapland. Apart from that, there are four hundred postgraduate students. There are 130 International graduate and postgraduate students. There are 220 Foreign exchange students also enrolled in the university.
Established in 1979, the University of Lapland is the youngest of the Finnish universities. Located on the Arctic Circle, it is also the most northern university in Finland and the European Union. During the first semester of its commencing classes, the number of students was only 300. Today there are about 4600 full-time students in five faculties. The University of Lapland has a staff of 650, half of which are academicians including 71 Professors.
The research strength at the University of Lapland lies in Northern Issues, in particular research into welfare, minorities, international relations, and international jurisprudence and applied environmental research.
