Institution Profile

The Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1848 by a private foundation. From the beginning of the year 1993, the status of the Academy has been raised to university level. The academy comprises of six departments. These departments include the Department of Painting, the Department of Sculpture, the Department of Printmaking, the Department of Media Studies, the Department of General Studies, and the Department of Postgraduate Studies.

The Academy of Fine Arts offers a wide range of degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The 3 to 5 years of complete studies lead to the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts. However, the Master’s degree from the academy takes two years longer to complete.

The Department of General Studies of the Academy of Fine Arts arranges teaching in supporting theoretical studies that are open to all students and also courses and workshops in different audiovisual techniques. However, the Department of Painting offers various courses in Drawing, Painting, and Life studio. Likewise, the Department of Sculpture offers courses in Sculpture, Ceramics, Metal- Stone-, and Woodworks, Concrete, Plastics , Foundry, Landart, Environmental art and other site-specific projects.

During the academic year 2006-2007, the number of students in the Academy of Fine Arts is about three hundred. Full-time teachers are all practising artists of repute, about 50 teachers and lecturers are working on hourly basis. In addition, the Academy invites tens of visiting lecturers and welcomes annually several foreign artists from all over the world to meet students.
