Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Surgery |
An MD degree in surgery and residency training are available from all medical schools in Canada.
Standards for Canadian applicants are usually more relaxed compared to International applicants. Admission is generally contingent on getting a favorable score on the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test); a score of at least 26 is necessary for admission to the surgery program. A grade of at least B is also required in the last 2 years of a previous program (and the higher the average, the more likely is admission). Students currently taking an undergraduate degree in any discipline are usually eligible for admission to the MD program in surgery; in some cases full completion of the previous degree is mandatory.
Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training. Many surgical residents can acquire advanced research degrees while pursuing their residency (MSc or PhD in surgical sciences or experimental surgery).
