Studying Space Science in Canada |
Students studying space science all begin with basic physics and engineering principles. They learn how to analytically use basic mechanical principles to create and operate useful tools specifically for space. They also learn how to decide amongst various design solutions to various problems by factoring in financial cost, safety, available resources, and serviceability.
Students studying spacecraft design learn about which materials spacecraft need to be built with, and learn about new materials being designed with very specific properties related to aerospace. Students also investigate how to integrate all these components into a working vehicle and determine limitations such as material fatigue over time, temperature control, and power system requirements. This happens through the use of mathematical modeling, computer simulations, scale models, and prototypes.
Students specializing in space operations study space mission analysis and design, satellite communication and navigation, remote sensing, astrodynamics, spacecraft mission geometry, space weather, and space law and policy. They also learn about space defense (against both natural objects and human attacks). They study historical encounters and apply the lessons learned to present-day scenarios. Those specializing in space policy also learn about world geopolitics, sociology, and psychology.
