Rheumatology Research Areas and Disciplines |
Most research is to improve the treatment and management of various joint and musculoskeletal disorders. This includes improving the diagnosis and management of osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and musculoskeletal pain.
Arthritis research is very active in Canada with collaborations amongst researchers in rheumatology, geriatrics, orthopedics, epidemiology, pharmaceutical sciences and rehabilitation sciences. Research with rehabilitation scientists is especially prevalent with studies into spinal cord injuries and hip fractures in the elderly.
Collaborations with software and biomechanical engineers is resulting in the development of software programs to measure cartilage thickness and bone microarchitecture, and improving the ability to image bone and cartilage via radiology.
Molecular studies into rheumatology focus on the biochemical measures of tissue following meniscal or other soft tissue surgeries. This helps determine whether future surgeries will likely be necessary. Recently, a lot of research is dealing with the background of autoimmune disease, which is the main cause of many rheumatic disorders. Also, the field of osteoimmunology has emerged to further examine the interactions between the immune system, joints and bones. Epidemiological studies and medication trials are also being conducted. Research and clinical trials on antibody therapies are also ongoing.
